• Voodoo - West-Afrika Oorspronkelijk is de voodoo (vodun) in West-Afrika ontstaan, meer bepaald in Togo en Benin. Bij deze volken heeft zich door de loop der eeuwen heen een wereldbeschouwing ontwikkeld, waarin geloof in een schepper, bijgestaan door goden en godinnen, voorouders en geesten, fundamenteel is. Van daaruit is voodoo later met de negerslaven naar andere werelddelen verhuisd. Zij brachten de voodoo naar landen als Cuba, Haïti, Brazilië, het Caribische gebied en Suriname. In Suriname vermengde de Afrikaanse voodoo zich met allerlei indianenrituelen, waaruit het huidige Winti ontstond. Winti kreeg in 2002 nationale en internationale aandacht door de vondst van enkele foetussen bij een Surinaamse Winti-priester in Amsterdam. Voodoo is in West-Afrika een religie. Weliswaar kan het zich met een andere godsdienst vermengen maar het blijft een religie. Bij de dagelijkse rituelen worden voorwerpen gebruikt die door gewijde personen gemaakt zijn en alleen voor deze doeleinden gebruikt worden. Zo bevinden zich in Togo en Benin nog kloosters waarin vodoovolgelingen een zekere periode doorbrengen. Centraal bij de rituelen staan potten, kalebassen, schalen en figuren van aardewerk. Ze worden gebruikt om de 'voodoo-krachten' te voeden. Tegelijkertijd dienen ze als tijdelijke behuizing van die krachten. Door te putten uit dit reservoir van krachten kan de mens zijn leven een gunstige wending geven. Bijvoorbeeld door de geesten in de voorwerpen gunstig te stemmen. In de praktijk zijn er op die manier vele voorwerpen ontstaan, die een rol spelen in het dagelijkse leven van een voodoo-gelovige. Door bepaalde rituelen, offers en dergelijke kan men de geesten gunstig stemmen, wat de kwaliteit van het leven kan verbeteren. Ook bij ziekte wordt geprobeerd via voodoo de geesten gunstig te stemmen en zo het lot van de zieke te verbeteren. Men kent echter voorwerpen van de witte en van de zwarte voodoo, waarbij de zwarte magie een rol speelt. Het voodoo-aardewerk is in de ogen van de volgelingen de vodoo zelf. Zij geloven dat de voodoo werkelijk aanwezig is in de potten en beelden.
